Services & Information

I first trained as a Mediator in 1995 and was accredited as a family law mediator by the Law Society of Scotland in 1996. Beyond family mediation I have trained in Special Educational Needs mediation and Restorative Justice. This gave me a broader understanding of mediation as an alternative dispute process. In the period 2000- 2004 I worked as a Children’s Reporter at the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration (SCRA). This brought me into contact with extremely serious, and at times, desperate situations. It strengthened my view that, while law is essential, professionals from a range of backgrounds need to understand each other and work together to achieve reasonable outcomes. While at SCRA I was seconded to establish a restorative justice service. The aim was to encourage children who committed offences to develop an awareness of the consequences. The aim was to encourage empathy and give young people the chance to stop and think about the impact of their behaviour. By the time I left, the system was embedded in Glasgow. It has been my practice for many years to discuss the option of counselling with clients. Emotions can be overwhelming. The stress, worry, anger or sadness people may feel will not just go away and can cloud judgement at a crucial time. I completed a post graduate diploma at Caleadonian University/Kinharvie on a part –time basis over two years. As part of the course I volunteered as a counsellor at the Tom Allan centre in Glasgow. Although I do not work as a counsellor I do think it was an invaluable experience for working in family law.
